WHO ARE the 2024 T20 World Cup FAVOURITES?
England
The defending T20 World Cup Champions, England have a dangerous batting lineup led by their captain Jos Buttler and featuring the likes of new boy Will Jacks and the experienced Jonny Bairstow in the middle order. They also welcome back, much missed, Jofra Archer to partner Mark Wood with an all-out fast pace attack with the ball. However Reece Topley is the in form bowler here. Englands most recent T20I form has been poor and there are again some questions surrounding their preperation to this T20 World Cup choosing to go out to the West Indies somewhat late.

England T20 Squad
England have announced a 15-member squad led by captain Jos Buttler to defend their T20 World Cup title.
It will be intresting to see how England utilises it's spinners on some of the more sluggish and spin friendly tracks and the inclusion of Kieron Pollard in the coaching ranks will help with some of those key decisions when it comes to playing on some of the less familiar cricket pitches and venues.
ONE TO WATCH: Jofra Archer is definitely one to watch with his ambling run up and bolt like quck deliveries but can he replicate the form that instantly pushed him into the England squad early on in his career? I'll also be keeping a keen eye on Josh Buttler's batting.
England have assembled a powerful batting and bowling squad with many all-rounders whilst also blending youth and experience.
England have a host of match winning batters who, on their day, can blast away any opposition as they aim to defend their T20 World Cup crown in the USA and West Indies.
- The squad features a mix of experienced players like Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, and emerging talents like Tom Hartley (spin), Harry Brook (bat) and Will Jacks (bat and spin).
- Jofra Archer makes a comeback to the England squad after being out for over a year due to an elbow injury. Jofra's last game (a-side from a warm up game against Pakistan, 30th May 2024) was on the 6th March 2023 v Bangladesh in an ODI, where he picked up 3 wickets and went for just under 4 runs an over.
- Other key players include Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, Reece Topley, and Mark Wood.
- England's batting will be led by Josh Buttler with Johnny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, and Will Jacks coming on in the middle overs.
- Phil Salt and Ben Duckett provide wicket-keeping options. However Phil Salt has been in very good form as of late and we may see Phil and Ben opeingin up the batting in order to give England a head start in the opening powerplay overs .
- Englands pace attack comprises Archer, Jordan, Topley, Wood, Chris Jordan and Sam Curran. Topley has been in good form as of late however Jofra Archer is still on the comeback trail and maybe a little rusty and may have to be used sparringly as he is coming back from injury.
- Adil Rashid and Tom Hartley will handle the spin department which may feature highly on some of the pitches in the Carribean. You also have Moeen Ali, Will Jacks and Liam Livingstone who are more than capable of throwing down a few overs and picking up valuable wickets.
- Jofra Archer's inclusion after a long injury layoff is a huge boost for England. He and Mark Wood are a frightening opening pair who can tame any opposition top order on their day.
- Chris Jordan (arguably Englands best fielder) returns to the England setup after last playing in September 2023. Chris is well like in the squad and is a specialist death bowler at the back end.
- Uncapped left-arm spinner Tom Hartley earned a call-up after an impressive India Test series debut and may well be used on some of the slow turning pitches in the West Indies.
It will be intresting to see how England utilises it's spinners on some of the more sluggish and spin friendly tracks and the inclusion of Kieron Pollard in the coaching ranks will help with some of those key decisions when it comes to playing on some of the less familiar cricket pitches and venues.

India
India are considered the favorites to win the tournament. They boast a formidable squad led by Rohit Sharma and featuring stars like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Kohli was the leading run-scorer in the recent IPL, while Bumrah excelled with the ball. India also have the in-form Suryakumar Yadav, currently the top-ranked T20 batter. However they last one the World Cup back in 2007 and this is arguably a better squad than the one that featured in that tournament. With the IPL India have valuable experience playing against most of the other top international players in this tournament. It would be difficult not to back them but then again we have heard that many times before.
ONE TO WATCH: T20 SQUAD: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj. |
Australia
The defending ODI and Test champions. Australia are aiming to hold all three ICC trophies simultaneously by winning this years T20 World Cup. They have destructive batters like Travis Head and wicket taking bowlers such as Mitchell Starc who are both in good form. Australia last won in 2021 T20 World Cup so cannot be counted out.
ONE TO WATCH: Without a doubt my eyes will be on Travis Head who recently hit 89* NOT OUT off 30 balls at a strike rate of 296.67. T20 Squad: Mitch Marsh (captain), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matt Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa. Reserves: Jake Fraser McGurk, Matthew Short. |
South Africa
South Africa boast a strong squad with in-form batters like Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, and Ryan Rickelton. They also have the highly-ranked Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi. However, their recent results have been underwhelming. But they always seem to play well in tournaments.
ONE TO WATCH: 23yr old Tristan Stubbs is the man to watch out for having recently played in the IPL for Mumbai Indians. Having averaged 36.82 and going at a strike rate of 173.82 hitting 26 sixes! He is known as the finisher! T20 Squad: Aiden Markram (captain), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeze Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs. Reserves: Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi |
New Zealand
The perennial dark horses, New Zealand made the 2022 semi-finals and have a squad full of experienced campaigners like Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, and Tim Southee to name buit a few. However they have a new and rising superstar in the talented Rachin Ravindra who featured in this years IPL. He could be crucial with both bat and ball and it will be interesting to see where he features in the batting line-up! No.3??
ONE TO WATCH: Rachin Ravindra but I will also be keeping a keen eye on the mercurial Kane Williamson. T20 Squad: Kane Williamson (c), Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee. Travelling Reserve: Ben Sears. |
HOME AND OUTSIDER HOPES
The West Indies are co-hosts and may pull out a few upsets playing in and on familiar home pitches and conditions. ONE TO WATCH: Nicholas Pooran is a devastating batsmen who has just hit form from his recent stint on the IPL. T20 Squad: Rovman Powell (captain), Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Obed McCoy, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd. |
Pakistan are also mentioned as potential contenders or outside favourites / long shots. Pakistan have arguably one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament but with some big characters can they maintain their discipline?
ONE TO WATCH: Babar and Rizwan as alway but it will be interesting to see how Mohammad Amir gets on, along side the ever watchable fast bowler Shaheen Afridi. T20 Squad: Babar Azam (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan. |
